Canon Fodder

What is the point of the "Great Books"? Some have seen the idea as an exercise in snobbery, some as an attempt to save Western civilization, some as a way to make money. Yet after reading this article the question remains: Are there some books that should be read by everyone?

where can the humanity be found to enter into a book from another time and place?

I think that's the point: if you are in touch with your humanity (even minimally), you can connect with authors from 1,000 years ago. But I think to do that, you need a teacher/master to help you along.
